The story starts when Miaka and Yui, two third year junior high students in Tokyo got sucked into a mysterious book called "The Universe of Four Gods" in the National Library. In this strange world, (which happens to be ancient China), they meet a terribly good looking guy, Tamahome, who has the chinese character "ogre" on his forehead. At the same moment, Yui disappears in a red glow and she is back in the library again; while Miaka's adventure continues and she becomes the Suzaku no Miko, guardian girl of the country Konan. Later in the story, Yui returns into the book and becomes the Seiryuu no Mikoguardian girl of the country Kutou. Due to some misunderstanding, they become enemies and the adventure goes on...
